Taking Courses as an Adult

Learning new things as an adult can be hard. It seems like no matter what you want to get into, it's always best to have learned it as a kid instead. And while children's brains have more neuroplasticity, that doesn't mean adult brains are completely stuck, unable to grow or change. And it's not even a "Well, if you try really hard you can maybe do it" thing, it's something our brains are capable of as a normal thing!

I like to try and learn different things, language learning, programming, etc. It can feel overwhelming, but with the internet there are so many free and good options! I'm taking a (FREE!) Harvard course on computer science. I also started another (free) course today with Stanford, on math. I hated it growing up, but as I've grown I've realized more how it can be used in everyday life. I think that's a big problem with math, and many other classes. Kids aren't told or shown how it's important to them and their lives. Even if it's not directly practical, there's still the importance of it exercising your brain. With math, it can help you with your problem solving skills, and train your mental stamina.

I've been hearing about the current literacy crisis, and I think it's important that we work to help our brains however we can. There should be nothing shameful about going back, and learning something that is typically taught to kids. You can learn math as an adult! You can learn to read as an adult! It's okay that you don't have the skills now, you haven't missed your chance, you can still learn :)
